Viper Island derives its name from the vessel ‘viper' in which Lt Archibald Blair settled in the island with the purpose of establishing a Penal settlement. The vessel, it is whispered, met with a n accident and its remains were abandoned near the island.
There are many colonial buildings in Viper Island which draws tourist attraction. Under the British regime the tiny serene island witnessed the untold sufferings and tortures of the freedom fighters.
The jail at Viper, where prisoners deported from the mainland were restricted, was built by the British under the supervision of Major Fort. Work on the prison was started in 1867.
Gallows built on top of a hillock, noticeable to all prisoners in the island, signified death and once this island was taken to be a permanent prison for local and mainland convicts. The jail was deserted after commissioning of the cellular jail. It is also known as ‘Viper Island' because of the presence of viper snakes in the past.
