The Chatham Island is situated at the northern tip of Port Blair. The primary attraction in Chatham Island is the Saw Mill which is linked by a bridge over the stretch of sea-water. The Saw Mill is famed to be one of the oldest and the largest in entire Asia. There are also huge and spacious workshops that
can be traced back to later half of the nineteenth century. They are constructed out of hard-wearing and costly padauk wood. Logging on the Chatham Islands has been prohibited since the 1970's. Since then wood is shipped from Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.
You can hire a guide who will show you through the entire process of logs being offloaded, sorted, cut and stored in commodious godowns. They are later shipped to the mainland.
The volcano is estimated to be 150 fathoms deep approximately . The volcano erupted first in 1787 then after a series of eruptions there were one in recent past in 1991 which lasted for 6 months.
Then the volcano erupted in 1994-1995 after which the most recent one was in 2005 which was linked to the Indian Ocean Earthquake in 2004.
