Ladainha in Goa stands for the meaning ‘litany to the Virgin Mary'. It is primarily a form of Thanksgiving and is very popular among the Goan Christians. This festival is celebrated to offer thanksgiving to god. Every year a different person who wants to have good luck in the following year or have been blessed with God's special grace patronizes it.
To celebrate Ladainha in Goa or say Thanksgiving people buy grams, Branco wine, candles and colorful tinsel from the local market. Everyone decorate their family altar with flowers, creepers, crotons laid out in vases. They prepare special food as they soak gram in water and put it on the fire to boil and later mix it with sliced coconut chips.
On the day of Ladainha or Ladin people sing litany accompanied with violin. Various kinds of hymns and prayers are also chanted. This chanting is presided over and conducted by the village choirmaster or a local violinist.
To sum it up, it can be said that all the people, irrespective of whether they are sponsors or not, thank God for all the material and spiritual gains.
