Goa Festivals in India - Novidade is an offering ceremony that takes place sometime around the months of August and September. During Novidade the farmers belonging to both Hindu and Christian community offers the first harvest of the rice crop to the Church. No farmer is allowed to harvest his crops before it is given to the Church as an offering. Novidade is a brilliant example of the religious tolerance and harmony that characterizes the life of the Goan people.
During Novidade in Goa, the parish priest himself harvests a sheaf and returns with it the Church to offer it as an offering at the altar of the Lord as a mark of thankfulness. The harvest assumes its normal course once the offering has been made. He is accompanied by the local people who celebrate with music, fire works and jubilation. During the second half of the month the women folk, who are the descendents of the earliest tribal settlers in Goa, perform a dance popularly known as the Bhandup.
