Traditions of Zatra at Cansaulin Festival Goa -
Zatra at Cansaulin Festivals is held every year on the 6th day of January, on the day of the Feast of the Magi to celebrate the arrival of the three kings at Bethlehem. This extraordinary Zatra is held at Cansaulin near Margao.
Three young boys, aged between 8 to 10 years, are chosen from different villages and are dressed in wigs and flashy garments and are dressed as colorful puppets. They are responsible to carry the gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense to the Child-God.
The ritual of the Zatra emphasizes their climb to a
church perched on a hillock near the village. Inside the
church is a carved infant Christ. Their ingoing to the
church marks the villagers to begin the merriment, dance
and music. There are fire-eating and fire walking feasts
organized by the villagers. Festivals of Goa is celebrated with gay abandon.
On the Mount of Remedios, the crowds gather from all parts of Goa to attend the Mass and get a quick look of the three kings. An elaborate fair also springs up covering the whole hilltop. One can shop for almost anything from a meal to copper and brassware, furniture, clothes, toys, trinkets, sweetmeats, glass bangles and spices of all sorts .
