It comes as a lovely surprise to many visitors to Goa that the state has as many Hindu festivals as its better familiar Christian ones. The medley goes to reflect the core fusion of two streams of powerful cultures.
One of the major festivals of Goa is Zatra of Shri Shantadurga. There are three temples which houses Goddess Shri Shantadurga. The temples are at Kavlem, Pemem and the third one at Footrope. Shri Shantadurga is the Goddess who meditates between Vishnu and Shiva. The ‘Zatra' of this Goddess in Pemem is held in the month of December.
Shri Shantadurga Goddess of the Fatorpa was removed to Fatorpa in 16 th Century in the era of Portuguese inquisition during a religious persecution. The annual ‘zatra' or journey falls in the month of Pausha Shuddha Navami and draws thousands of devotees.
The Zatra of Shri Shantadurga involves a colorful and vibrant procession with which the devotees take the deity out of the temple for the day.
Several other temples where the Zatras are of special significance are Calangute, Mangueshi, Karmali, Nagueshi, Velinga, Ramnathi, Mapusam, Kavlem, Madki, Mala-Panaji, Kundai, Mashel, Shiroda, Amona, Khandepar, Fatorpa, Borim, Mulgaon and Kapileshwari.
