Fort Tours - The construction of Chapora Fort was commissioned by Adil Shah of Bijapur. Located at a distance of about 22 km from Panaji, Chapora Fort is built of red laterite and sits as a crown on the rock bluff. The Portuguese undertook to rebuild the bastion in the first quarter of the seventeenth century on the same site.
Chapora is derived from “Shahpura” or the “Town of the Shahs”. The Fort was originally built as a border watch post. It was later abandoned by the Portuguese in 1892, as they started extending the borders of its empire farther north. The

The fort as it stands to day is in a dilapidated state. The monumental ramparts and the Muslim tombstones are what are left of the Chapora Fort. They are believed to be the relics of the pre-colonial days. The heads of the tunnels is visible till now. They were believed to have provided supply routes for besieged defenders.
