Terekhol
Fort in Goa was built at the behest of the Raja of Samanwadi, Maharaja Sawant Bhosle. One of the most famous forts in Goa, the Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort was appropriated by the Portuguese viceroy, Dom Pedro de Alameida in the second half of the eighteenth century. After its capture by the Portuguese, the damaged fort was revamped. In 1825, the Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort served as the base for armed revolt by the first Goan born Viceroy of Goa, Dr. Bernardo Peres da Silva against the Portuguese forces.
Goa Fort Tours encompasses a heritage hotel apart from a century-old church commemorated to St. Anthony. The church remains closed to general public and opens occasionally for festivals and celebrations. Marked by turrets and encircled by a trench, the fort overlooks the panoptic ocean. The serenity that pervades the place can be attributed to the merging of the tranquil sea and the river. The best part about exploring the Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort is the soul-stirring view from the ramparts. The sea extends for miles, and the bushes underneath gently sway in the breeze. Arranging a picnic on the beach can be a delightful experience. Those who have a keen interest in history and architecture cannot afford to skip visit to Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort.
