One of the most spectacular of all monuments in Goa, reproduced on innumerable travel brochures and advertisments is the St Augustine tower in Old Goa. The Portuguese government later issued a veto against them.
The twelve men vacated the church and the convent besides it. The church and the convent both are ruined now. However, the elevated 46-metre high Bell Tower still remains and forms a foremost segment of the ruins.
This highly noticeable landmark, a 46m-high tower formed part of the facade of a splendid Church and served as a belfry.
The tower is one of the four towers of Church of St. Augustine in Goa that once stood at the site. Primarily built of late rite and massive in size,
it spread over four storeys. The Church of St. Augustine in Goa had eight richly ornamented chapels and four altars and a convent with many cells attached to it
On incoming the church, the visitor would have a sight of the impressive retable of the high altar, with its large gilt tabernacle sheltered within an arch, through a screen of arched piers.
Religious Destinations in Goa - The nave of the Church now lies open to the sky and covering the vast nave was a barrel vault, whose mammoth weight regrettably hastened its collapse.
Ruins of Church of St. Augustine - The church was fully vacated in the early 18 th century. The church fell into abandon and the vault collapsed in 1842.
The church's downfall began with the collapse of this vault. The main edifice of the church was soon ruined, but the facade remained undamaged.
The tower's huge bell was moved in 1871 to the Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panjim, where it remains and can be seen and heard today.
In 1931, the facade and half the tower fell down, followed by more sections in 1938 leaving only half the tower that is seen and visited by thousands of tourists today.
With the passage of time, the church slowly was ruined and all that remains now is the high and lofty Bell Tower.
Considered to be one of the largest churches in Goa, one can never really fathom the magnanimity of the structure from the Ruins of Church of St. Augustine.
But the towering Bell Tower still reminds us of the Portuguese rulers who once ruled the country.
The bell of the Bell Tower was first kept in Fort Aguada Light House till 1871 AD and now it is kept in Our Lady of Immaculate Conception at Panaji and is still working today.
