An inscription in Pattadakal reveals that Devadasis were betrothed in `Nritya seva' in temples. During the Rashtrakuta and the later Chalukya periods, the courtesans had duties
assigned to them in temples and they were skillful dancers.The ruined city of Hampi comes alive at the lively festival of Pattadakkal Dance. One can see ruins of temples, barracks as well as palaces which are spacious and have richly decorated carvings, some grand pavilions and large pillars.
The site was built at the time of the great rule of Vijayanagar, Krishna Deva Raya during 1509 to 1529. One of the surprises to see here is the King's Balance which was used to weight the kings with gold or money and distribute them to the poor of the area.
