Kalpeni an important tourist place in Lakshadweep ,
comprises of three uninhabited, satellite islands, all
surrounded by picturesque lagoons. It is 287km from
Cochin and has an area of 2.79 sq km.You will be awe
struck by the view of sunrays reflecting like million
stars on the water of the lagoons. The tourists can
stay back at Koomel, the gently curving bay and it directly
overlooks Pitti and Tilakkam to of the islands.
Kalpeni is famous for its scenic natural beauty. The
small islets ,Tilakkam & Pitti are favorite tourist
destinations and also another interesting place is an
uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam.The
huge shallow lagoon enclosing all these islands lends
a unique charm to Kalpeni. You will be amazed by the
massive storm bank of coral remains along the eastern
and south-eastern shorelines of Kalpeni atoll . This
was created as it is believed by the boulders thrown
up in a storm in 1847.
Kalpeni is quite developed island and here only the
girls first went to school, though women's education
was considered as a taboo in Lakshadweep.
