The Muslims of Kerala respect the 10th day of this month. This special 10th day is illustrious and performed with great honor by the Shias and the Sunnies all over the world.
In Kerala, Muharram is distinguished by observing the `Pulikali' or `Tiger-dance'.
Some Muslims paint their whole body in black and yellow, put on masks of tiger-faces and try to perform like a tiger.
They demo through the streets dancing, walking and imitating a tiger. This kind of show is put up to symbolize the exuberance of Hussain.
The devotees end their fast after the procession and give away garments money and food to the deprived and the sick people.
Idul Fitr - Festivals of Kerala
Idul Fitr is illustrious after the end of the Ramzan fast when Muslims give up all kind of food and drink during the day and spend the major part of the night prayer.
Id-ul-Zuha, Idul-Adha or Bakrid, the festival of sacrifice is commanded by Muslims all over India as well as the world.
This festival is celebrated to respect the sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim, who eagerly killed his son at God’s command.
To venerate this event, Muslims sacrifice one animal, e.g. a bakr or goat for each family or a group of families.
The sacrifice is followed by prayers at mosques, imposing feasts and merry-making. The Muslims wear new garments especially white, break in each other’s places and exchange good wishes.
In the crack of dawn of Bakrid in Kerala and other parts of the world reverberates with the sound of Thakhir (Allah Akbar), symbolizing that the God is great and generous.
In Kerala, Bakrid is well-known particularly as the occasion for meeting of the eminent members of sister communities.
Everybody in the Muslim community recites the Thakbir after draping themselves in white.
