And one of those agriculture-related festivals is Pongal. Pongal is a very popular festival in Tamil Nadu. It is popularly known as the festival of harvest.
Pongal festival or the festival of harvest is observed mainly to mark the harvesting of crops by farmers.
Pongal festival or the Festival of Harvest is celebrated in the middle of January in Tamil Nadu. In this month people get busy in preparations for celebrating this occasion. On the auspicious day of festival people thank their god, earth, and cattle for bestowing wonderful harvest.
Tamil Nadu Festivals - Pongal Festival lasts for four days. All the four days are given separate names. The first day is called the Bhogi Pongal.
On this day people put their old clothes and materials on fire to mark the end of the old and emergence of the new.
Tamil Nadu Festivals - Surya Pongal is the second day of the Pongal Festival. It is the important day of the occasion.
It falls on the first day of the Tamil month Thai. On this day women worship the sun God and wake early to make beautiful kolums or rangoli on the grounds in front of their home.
The third day is called the Maattu Pongal. On this day devotees pay homage to cattle as they give milk and are used to plough the lands.
Kaanum Pongal is the fourth and the last day of this festival. On this day people meet their family members and seek their blessings.
Kaanum literally means ‘to see’ and is the fourth day of the Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu. As the name indicates, Kaanum Pongal is essentially a day of relaxation and socializing and people either visit relatives or go out on a picnic.
One of the most important events on the day is the visit to the banks of Kaveri River. Many people pack their lunch and a have a picnic lunch on the riverbank. In many places special prayers are offered to Mother Kaveri.
In certain parts of rural Tamil Nadu, people use the opportunity provided by Kaanum Pongal to perform the ritual ‘Kummippatu’ or ‘kumi patu.’
This is a ritual performed for the speedy marriage of girls whose marriages are unduly delayed. The girl whose marriage is delayed is made to sit in the center of a circle formed by women dancing to the tune of ‘Kummi pattu.’
However, the big event of this day is Jallikattu Bull Fight in which villagers try to tame the wild bull. After this event, bullock cart races and cock fights are also held.
