All through the dry summer months the plant life remains torpid. The landscape is
dominated by short, drought resistant pine trees or scrub oak trees. Besides these the deciduous and evergreen trees also grows abundantly. The plants have hard and waxen leaves that help them to retain moisture and survive the months of drought.
Vallanadu Black Buck National Park boasts of a number of other animal species besides the black buck that makes it famous. There are the spotted deer, macaques, jungle cat, mongoose and wild hares.

Vallanadu Black Buck Sanctuary is located in Thoothukudi District, with Madurai Airport and Tirunelveli Railway station located at a distance of 165 km and 20 km, respectively.It is a peacock farm situated at Ottapidaram. Mayura Thottam is spread over an area of 55 acres. A large number of migratory birds also visit this place every year during the breeding season. The diet of the black buck consists mostly of grasses, although it does eat pods, flowers and fruits too. The maximum life span of Blackbucks is 16 years and the average is 12 years.
