The perfect beach is more than just sand and waves, but those are good places to start. While the quality of the sand and the clarity of the water are important, the scenery must be beautiful and the water must also be swimmable.

While the beaches of New England (especially New Hampshire and Maine) are dramatic with their lovely coastline, Victorian homes and dark blue water, the Atlantic is often freezing--and dirty--even in the middle of a July
heat wave. For many New Englanders, summer memories are marked by standing at the shoreline, mustering up the courage to dive into the icy water or waiting until their feet have become numb before ducking into the waves.
With that in mind, we have taken a look at some of the best beaches in the world.
Beach-goers will not have to muster up any courage to dive into the waters of the beaches on our list--unless you're worried about how you look in a swimsuit, but we can't help with that.
We looked at the quality of the sand and the water as well as the surrounding area.
Most of the beaches on our list have more to offer than sun and sand; they also have plenty of restaurants and bars.
It's no good being in the middle of paradise if you can't find something to eat.
A few of the beaches on our list, such as Miami's South Beach and Australia's Bondi Beach, also have a lively nightlife as well, so sunbathers can show off their tans at night.
If your favorite beach isn't on our list, please write in and let us know.
Wide sandy beaches, popular, busy beaches, secluded beaches - for most of us, the best beach is a soft white sandy beach, with a crystal clear blue sea lapping in a gentle breeze, on which our worries waft away.
Beaches are all about escape. Holidays revolve around them - other than the hotel, the most important part of many holidays is the beach.
So it's important to get the beach right. When planning your holiday, think about what sort of beach you want - because, after all, beaches come in many flavours.
Some are busy, so jam-packed with lilos and deckchairs and windbreakers that you will be hard pressed to find space after 10 in the morning.
Others are difficult to get to, but well worth it when you do. Is the hotel 'near' the beach, or on the beach? And is there a main road in front of it, between you and the beach?
So be clear - and do your research. Sand quality is also important.
The distance between Barbados and St Lucia may only be a few hundred miles, but one is black, volcanic sand, while the other is soft and white.
Tarifa has windy beaches, so windy the sand can whip painfully around your legs - while Norfolk has low, flat, wet beaches - ideal for riding and walking, not so easy to swim from.
